Web Development and Web Design Projects
Stemming.org (launched December 2009) — design/development — is a networking site and collaborative blog intended to encourage and connect girls and women interested in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math).
I founded and run the site, created the original design, and coded the Ruby on Rails backend.
Stemming's features include:
- User accounts, logins, and profiles
- User blogs
- A collaborative blog featuring selected posts promoted by the administrator
- User friendships (users' friends are listed on their profiles)
- User and post tagging for easy browsing and search
- Filters and search enabling users to find posts and users by interest
- A user recommendation feature that suggests other users who have similar interests to and/or live near a particular user
- A "most active users" algorithm that displays users who use the site frequently on the homepage
Running Hen Microfarm (relaunched December 2009) — design/development — is my parents' small, sustainable-living focused farm in West Virginia. They wanted a simple blog to show off photos and stories from their farm as they raise chickens, make their own potting soil, live in a geothermally-heated house, and more. I designed the site, integrating photos of farm life into a header graphic, and set up a WordPress backend for blogging and easy updates.
B.I. Solutions (launched December 2009) — design/development — is a data intelligence company that needed a website to help them attract and test potential contractors.
I created the original design, and coded the Ruby on Rails backend.
B.I. Solutions' features include:
- User accounts, logins, and profiles
- Timed exams for potential contractors
- An admin panel where administrators can view applicants and their exam scores
- A simple content management system enabling the administrator to edit the site text
- Invoice generation
AMO Painting (relaunched November 2009) — development — is the online portfolio of a Massachusetts painter. She wanted to keep the design of her existing site, including Flash elements, but wanted an easier way to edit the site and add pieces to her collection. I converted her existing design to a WordPress theme and modified a WordPress gallery plugin to display images in the desired format while still being easy to update.
Scarleteen (October 2009–present) — maintenance — is a comprehensive sex education resource for teenagers (or others!) that's feminist, progressive, and inclusive; it brings honest and factual advice to tens of thousands of users daily! I work on updates, bug fixes, and customizations using the site's Drupal platform.
- Facebook Data Store Ruby API Client (published October 2009) — development — is an open-source Ruby client to the Facebook Data Store API. I coded this to help with a Ruby/Facebook project commissioned through Parallactic Consulting; it's released under an MIT License and available for download at GitHub.
Paper and Lens (launched September 2009) — development — is a husband-and-wife blog about photography, painting, and gardening that's heavily focused on displaying images. Ani is a print designer, and I helped her modify the design concepts she'd come up with to work well on the web and created a WordPress theme for the blog.
The College Hookup (launched September 2009) — development — is a new social networking website aimed at connecting college students. I developed the site's database-driven social networking features in Ruby on Rails.
The College Hookup's features include:
- User logins, accounts, and profiles
- User friendships
- User photo galleries
- "Invite friends" features
- An administrative interface to edit front page content
Templeman Automation (launched May 2009) — design/development — is the online presence of a product development company creating innovative techologies for military and government use. I designed a completely new site for them and integrated the new site with a customized version of WordPress that enables the client to easily update and add pages in multiple areas of the site. I also integrated Google Checkout into their site so customers can easily make purchases online, and used sIFR to display custom text in a unique font.
- City Lights Blog (April 2009–present) — updates/maintenance — is a WordPress blog I updated with custom coding of the site's sidebar to display the unique category selections the client wanted; I also performed maintenance and updates with PHP, HTML, and CSS.

Espressy (launched March 2009) (currently unavailable) — development/HTML coding — was an innovative new social networking site focused on personal expression through link sharing and broadcasting.
I coded the site's Ruby on Rails backend and collaborated on the HTML/CSS front-end coding.
Espressy's features included:
- User accounts, logins, and profiles
- Link posts, featuring users' descriptions of external sites and automatically generated thumbnails
- Discussion posts and ability for users to comment on links and discussions
- A voting system for users to rate the posted links and discussions
- A "points" system indicating users' level of involvement with the site
- User friendships (users' friends are listed on their profiles)
- Ability for users to subscribe to other users' posts and view them in a subscription page
- Filters and search enabling users to find posts and users that matched their interests
- User photo galleries
- Comments on user profiles

MetaArts (launched March 2009) — design/HTML coding — is the website of an educational publishing, creative consulting, and business communications development house; I designed their website based on existing promotional materials to tailor their strong brand for web-specific concerns. The site uses CushyCMS to provide a simple way for the client to update the site's content.
- Community Care (launched March 2009) — HTML coding/updates — is a site I coded in HTML and CSS from a provided Photoshop design.

My Woman Today (launched February 2009) (currently unavailable) — development — is a site selling classified advertisements and featuring news, forums, and articles targeted at professional women.
I coded the site's backend in Ruby on Rails and MySQL.
MyWomanToday's features included:

- The ability to post and search classified ads
- An e-commerce system charging users for the ads they post
- An administrative backend enabling the administrator to edit the site's pages and content

- Really Useful Information (December 2008–present) — HTML coding/updates — is a corporate site I built in HTML and CSS from a provided design, integrated with CushyCMS, and subsequently updated as needed using HTML and CSS.

Ruth Raubertas Piano Studio (launched December 2008) — design/HTML coding — is the website for my mom's piano studio: I designed a green, earthy theme to evoke the studio's location on a mini-farm and clearly present information for current and potential students.
This site uses Cushy CMS, a simple way for non-technical users to easily update content.

MyIGEA (launched November 2008) (currently unavailable) — development/HTML coding — was a restaurant review site with a twist: it was targeted at food-allergy sufferers, and ranked restaurants for users based on the reviews of other users with similar allergy profiles.
I coded the site's dynamic, database-driven features in Ruby on Rails and MySQL and coded the majority of the front-end HTML/CSS.
MyIGEA's features included:
- User logins and accounts where users could specify their allergies from a checklist
- Ability for users to add restaurants to the system
- Bookmarks that could be added to a user's profile so users could revisit particular restaurants
- Reviews and star ratings for restaurants
- Ability to sort restaurants by how highly they were rated by other users with similar allergies
- Ability to search the restaurant database
- Integration with the Yelp API to add additional information to restaurant pages
- Integration with the Google Maps API to display location information about each restaurant

Jed Capital, LLC (launched September 2008) — design/development — is the website of a trading firm that needed a fresh, modern redesign to convey their forward-looking brand and attract new talent.
I created a new original design for the site and integrated the design with the Joomla! content management system so Jed Capital's non-technical staff could easily update the site with new job postings and other content.

Bankroll a Pro (launched August 2008) (currently unavailable) — development — was a network connecting professional poker players with financial backers; I coded the PHP/MySQL database-driven backend.
Bankroll a Pro's features included:
- Pro and sponsor accounts, logins, and profiles
- Forms for sponsors to offer to back pros; the forms forward the sponsor's and pro's information to the site administrator
- Ability for the administrator to specify featured pros, whose profile info is displayed on the homepage and in the site's sidebars

The Next Big Thing (launched March 2008) (currently unavailable) — design/HTML coding — wanted a hip look to catch the attention of college-bound young women; I created a new original design for the site and used a JavaScript-driven one-page structure for a youth-oriented twist on an efficient system to display information about the leadership workshop.

Fly Over the City (launched January 2008) — development/HTML coding — is a bike messenger service that relies on this web-based dispatching system to organize and deploy their riders.
I coded the entire Ruby on Rails/MySQL backend and the HTML/CSS front-end.
Fly Over the City's features include:
- A job board where dispatchers view pending jobs and assign them to riders
- Dispatcher and client logins; dispatchers and clients can add new jobs to the system
- Ability for administrators to set up recurring jobs that automatically appear on the job board at predictable intervals
- Ability for administrators to automatically generate PDF invoices for clients based on a given date range

- Advertisement through custom RSS feeds, with an e-commerce system for advertisers to pay for the feeds
