Hosting
Depending on the complexity of your site, I can generally work with your existing hosting; I also recommend Blue Box Group, especially for Ruby on Rails sites.
“Static Site”
A "static site" means a site that doesn't do anything other than display information.
Some static sites in my portfolio include Jed Capital and MetaArts.
I can make it easy for you to update your static site by setting up a Content Management System like CushyCMS (used on MetaArts), Joomla (used on Jed Capital), or Wordpress (used on Templeman Automation).
“Web Application”
A "web application", in contrast to a static site, is a site that does something (a social network like Facebook, a store like Threadless, or an application like Yelp).
Some web applications in my portfolio include Espressy and MyWomanToday.
