About Clara
Web design and development have fascinated me for many years — they combine art and technology in a way that few other activities do.
I created websites as a hobby when I was a teenager, then started studying programming seriously at the University of Chicago, where I earned a degree in computer science.
Soon after graduating in 2006, I started my freelance career as an independent web designer and web developer.
I strive to keep websites flexible, future-proof, and accessible by using free and open-source languages and tools and by implementing sites with web standards and best practices.
I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts (with a graduate student and a small network of electronic devices); I'm happy to meet Boston-area clients at a T-accessible location, or work with remote clients over email and phone — whatever communication process works best for you.
When Not Making Websites
Before starting a web development company, I grew up in a bookstore in West Virginia, helped start and run a 'zine (and a Shakespearean theatre company, and an a cappella group), and picked up a degree in linguistics with honors. I enjoy biking, blogging, crosswords, drawing, drumming, exploring, installing Linux, feminism, fixing things, improv, painting, personality typing, pesco-vegetarian cooking, pickup basketball, playing outside, politics, reading, running, scav hunt, throwing parties, trying to learn math, trying to learn Spanish, and zymurgy.
Recommendations
“Clara is a fantastic designer and developer. She is reliable, trustworthy, and delivers good results. She created a functional and bug-free complex networking website according to plan. I would hire her again for future work and look forward to discussing future ideas, and listening to her expert feedback.” Joe Chan, The College Hookup
“Clara designed my company website, and she did a fantastic job. I was uncertain what I wanted or needed in a website, and Clara was incredibly patient, offered excellent direction, and came up with a creative and user-friendly design and concept. I'm extremely pleased with the website; more importantly, my clients are impressed.” Deborah Rogus, MetaArts
“I would highly recommend Clara to any company small or large for not only her highly developed knowledge of design and consulting, but for the way she worked with my clients to always find the most cost effective and forward thinking set of applications that would best fit my clients needs. Clara has given me the ability to grow my business in ways I would not have been able to do without her inventive, out-of-the-box ideas and superlative work, from concept to final output.” Paul Cloutier, Webstudio Boston
“Efficient, professional, punctual - and that trait so hard to find among technical types: highly INTUITIVE (she grasps the customer's need amazingly quickly and gets the big picture). Simply put, Clara is the best internet engineer we have ever worked with! (I think this means something, since we are located in Silicon Valley and have worked with many.)” Laszlo Tamas, Espressy
“Clara's the firefighter who douses the flames in our hair. Every time we're about to miss a deadline or our other web team have broken some link or lost a crucial database, Clara arrives with calm cheer and unequivocal expertise, and she gets stuff done. She's responsive and clear, timely, and consistently returns quality work. I don't know how she does it, but I'm glad she's around.” Jonathan Cowperthwait, SpiralGroup
